The Traffic Pump System

Getting great performance from the best home theater system that you’re able to afford is not a trivial process. Home theater systems have an array of tweaks and settings that make all the difference in the experience that you receive from your investment. It is actually a bad assumption that you can get the best performance from a system by setting it up untouched right out of the box. Every system comes with a set of instructions that include a list of guidelines to follow when setting up.

In this article we will discuss setting up a High Definition TV (HDTV) home theater system (not a video projector). If you think you have the “right stuff” to install your own system remember the tips below as you move forward:

Tip#1 – When selecting your HDTV a key measurement is the distance from the seating area to the screen. Obviously the further the screen is from you the larger the screen. A large room with multiple seating positions needs a larger screen. There are formulas for this screen to eye distance available on the internet.

Screen resolution also plays a role in determining the distance. You should only be as close to the screen as your eyes are able to see the highest resolution. If you are close enough to see the pixels you are probably close enough to appreciate the resolution. If you go beyond that point then you lose your ability to appreciate the resolution of the screen. There are also simple formulas available that break down that distance.

Tip #2 – Try to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines when setting up your HDTV. You will be surprised by the myriad settings available that all impact how you see the picture on the screen. It can be very confusing. There are the resolution formats (720P, 1080P, 1080i) and screen formats (16:9, 4:3). You may need help from an expert installer to get the best quality.

Tip #3 – Once you nail down the picture environment you must consider the speakers. The sound quality can make or break the experience for the best home theater system. Consider the speaker selection an investment. The saying “you get what you pay for” is very true in speaker parlance. Buy a brand of speaker that has a reputation for good quality but don’t get taken in by the hype of some brands. You can pay as much money as you want to pay for speakers (it seems that the sky is the limit, it is easy to over pay).

It is always a very good idea to be patient and take your time to listen to different speaker sets to find brands that appeal to you. Speaker appeal is much like buying a good bottle of wine; it all boils down to personal preference.

Mixing speaker brands is usually a bad idea. Most speaker sets are designed and optimized to work best together. Many speaker vendors allow you to test the speakers in the room that you want to use them. Take advantage of this if it is available. It is one of the best tests for your home theater system.
